Hydration Isn't Just Water: Why Every Diver Should Think About Electrolytes

LMNT HydrationMatters

One of the most common pieces of advice in scuba diving is simple: stay hydrated. It's excellent advice—but it's only part of the story.

Hydration isn't just about how much water you drink. It's also about how effectively your body can maintain fluid balance, especially after a long day of diving in warm weather or making multiple dives.

Why Divers Lose Fluids

Many divers don't realize how many factors contribute to dehydration during a typical dive day.

Breathing compressed air exposes your lungs to very dry gas, which increases respiratory water loss. Add in sun exposure, boat rides, heavy exposure suits, and repetitive dives, and it's easy to finish the day with a fluid deficit.

Another factor is immersion diuresis. When you're immersed in water, your body shifts blood toward the center of your body, which signals your kidneys to produce more urine. That's one reason many divers notice they need to urinate shortly after entering the water.

Why Electrolytes Matter

Water is essential, but electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium help regulate normal fluid balance and support healthy muscle and nerve function.

If you're spending a long day diving, especially in hot weather, replacing both fluids and electrolytes can be part of a smart hydration plan.

Hydration and Dive Safety

It's important to keep expectations realistic. Hydration does not prevent decompression sickness, and no drink mix can eliminate dive-related risks.

However, dehydration is considered one of several modifiable risk factors associated with DCS. That's why many dive professionals include hydration as part of their overall dive preparation, along with conservative dive planning, proper training, and adherence to their dive computer.
