Getting Started: New Diver FAQs

What’s the best way to start scuba diving?
It's really as easy as 1 - 2 - 3!

The PADI Open Water Diver course is your entry point into the world of scuba diving. Southern Maryland Divers trains new divers from across the Mid-Atlantic with a focus on confidence, control, and real-world diving skills—not rushed certifications.

This internationally recognized certification allows you to dive worldwide and is ideal for beginners from Maryland, Washington DC, Northern Virginia, and Delaware.

We hold classes year-round and you can get started as soon as today by signing up online HERE
What’s the difference between Discover Scuba and Open Water certification?
The PADI Discover Scuba Course is basically a "Try-it" experience and is perfect if you're on the fence about committing to a full class. You will get to try scuba but will not be certified to scuba dive after.

The PADI Open Water Diver Course is a full certification course resulting in an internationally recognized lifelong certification to adventure!
How long does Open Water certification take?
The average student takes 10-12 hours to complete the E-learning. We provide a minimum of 8 hours confined water "Pool" time working on skills. There are 4 final mandatory dives in an open water environment that must occur over two days, which happens during a weekend. Full details can be found HERE
What’s included in the course price (instruction, pool time, checkout dives)?
Southern Maryland Divers believes in a no hidden fees philosophy. Our course is broken into two portions covering the 3 steps of certification. Step 1 and 2 (E-Learning and Pool Work) and Step 3 (Quarry Checkout). The fees for these portions are all inclusive with the one exception of personal equipment.

Because fit is crucial, we require the students purchase their own mask, snorkel, fins, and fin boots for the course. Those items are discounted for our students in the shop along with expert fitting by one of our team members.

For the rest of the course, you won't see another cent added to your fees. From pool entry to "big ticket" equipment rental, to air fills and quarry entry, we've got you covered. No surprises.
What do I need to buy vs what can I rent for class?
You won't need to rent anything as all those items are included in your course fee but you will have to purchase your own mask, snorkel, fins, and fin boots which we offer at a discount to our students in the shop.
What age can someone start scuba diving?
The minimum age to get PADI Junior Open Water Certified is 10 years old. Children ages 10 to 15 will complete the same exact training as an adult resulting in a Junior Open Water Certification.

The Junior Open Water Certification comes with two restrictions that are different from an adult. They have a 40ft max depth limit, and they must be accompanied by either a certified parent or a pro level diver such as a divemaster or instructor.

When they turn 15 years old, their certification will automatically transition to full open water with no additional training required.
Do you offer private instruction?
Yes, we offer private instruction for a premium. Contact us to discuss this further.
Do you offer small class sizes / flexible scheduling?
Our class sizes always fall within the safety standards set forth by PADI for student to instructor ratios oftentimes being significantly higher in instructors or divemasters than required.

Should the case arise that our student counts threaten the ratio or we believe it to be unsafe, we will bring in another instructor or split the class into two different classes. Our safety record is unblemished since the day we opened our doors and we will continue to make safety our #1 core mission.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Yes, but you don't need to be Michael Phelps! There is a swim test involved but most find it easily completed without much effort. You must swim 200 yards (any stroke) without stopping, touching the bottom or the sides. It is not timed and you can swim however you like as long as your head stays above the water. There is also a 10 minute tread water following the same rules.
What medical forms are required before training?
The PADI Diver Medical Participant Questionnaire must be completed by each student. Under certain circumstances, you may have to have your physician sign off on the form stating you are healthy enough to dive. That form can be found HERE
What if I haven’t dived in a long time—should I do a refresher?
The generally accepted rule on refreshing your skills is that if you haven't dove in over a year, you should either 1. Complete a dive with a buddy and have your log signed off on, or 2. Complete a refresher class like our PADI Re-Activate Course .

While not always a requirement, many charter operators and dive shops hold this standard for your safety.

Training Logistics & Policies

How do I sign up for a class?
The easiest way to sign up for one of our classes is to head over to our website and register online . You are also welcome to stop into the shop or call to complete this task as well.

Whichever method you choose, we will be sure to get you all the info you need to be successful in your course.

If you run into problems, please don't hesitate to contact us so we can help you.
Do you offer eLearning / online academics?
Unless specifically requested, all of our courses are taught utilizing E-learning courses. We've found that students retain the information better with the visually rich and interactive content of E-learning.

Unless specified, all of our course fees INCLUDE the E-learning course. We will issue the code once the course registration fee has been taken care of.
What happens if I miss a class session?
This is course specific due to logistics. For example, a class taught at our on-site pool is relatively easy to reschedule if you miss a class. On the other hand, a class taught at the College of Southern Maryland Pool requires us to pay for another pool rental fee and availability is extremely limited.

Your goal should be to not miss any classes unless absolutely necessary.
What’s your reschedule policy for pool sessions and open water weekends?
Our policy along with all conditions can be found on our policies page HERE or you can download it here
What certification agencies do you teach under (recreational / tech / CCR)?
For all recreational classes we teach exclusively under PADI. For technical and CCR instruction we teach under TDI.
Do you offer CPR/First Aid training for divers?
Yes, we offer the PADI EFR Primary and Secondary Care courses along with the DAN CPR And First Aid Course.
Can I bundle courses (Open Water + Nitrox, etc.)?
Yes, we have bundles available in certain circumstances. Ultimately, the number of courses you can take at any given time is usually dictated by the training standards set forth and your available time.

One example of a bundle we offer is the Open Water CORE package . It you opt into the core package you end up with Advanced Open Water and two specialties that count towards the 5 required for your Master Scuba Diver Rating.

Continuing Education (Advanced / Rescue / Specialty / Pro)

What course should I take after Open Water?
The next logical step after Open Water is Advanced Open Water. We even have a deal where if you start on the same weekend as your Open Water Checkout Dives, you end up saving money! Check it out.

Do I need Advanced Open Water before Nitrox?
No, you do not, but most of the advantages of using Nitrox come with some added depth you can obtain by being Advanced. It's a fine balance.

Luckily, Nitrox doesn't require any diving and is a fairly quick course. You can get signed up HERE
Which specialties do you recommend for Mid-Atlantic diving (cold water, low vis, wreck)?
We recommend Advanced Open Water, Drysuit , Self Reliant , Underwater Navigation , and Search and Recovery Specialties. Due to the skills taught in these courses, you gain a unique advantage when dealing with the lower visibly conditions we are frequently challenged with.
Do you offer Rescue Diver and Divemaster?
Yes, we offer both Rescue and Divemaster. Rescue is offered each weekend we are at the local quarry and Divemaster runs more like a year long internship.
Can I go from Open Water to professional levels with you?
The short answer is yes. The long answer is yes but we don't cut corners for fast track training for card collectors. We have no problem helping you reach your goals but we want to be proud of the diver you become so it will be challenging and not spoon fed.
Do you offer buoyancy coaching/clinics?
We often manage to offer these several times a year based on lower student counts for scheduled classes. If we have the pool and the class size is small, we will offer them.
Do you offer technical diving training?
Yes, we offer tech diving all way to hypoxic CCR training.
Can I use my own gear for tech/CCR classes?
Yes, and most tech / CCR divers own their own gear if they've decided to commit on this training. Muscle memory is critical in these conditions and owning your own gear allows you to develop that.
Do you require a minimum number of logged dives for tech/CCR?
Yes. In all cases we require the minimum number of dives / depths required by the course pre-requisites. In some cases, the instructor may require more based on his or her assessment of your skills prior to engaging in training.

Local Diving: Maryland / DC / VA / DE

Where do most local divers train (quarries, shore sites, charters)?

Contact Southern Maryland Divers for details.

Do you organize local group dives?
Southern Maryland Divers, LLC is proud to fully support the Southern Maryland Dive Club. The club is not part of the business but has the full support of the shop. The club is designed for everyone and anyone to join us at our meetings to learn new things, discuss dive trips, and meet new people.

The club has no membership requirements or dues, and is very informal. Just show up to the meetings and enjoy the content that has been put together for you.

The club schedules local fun dives, oyster diving, and other fun SCUBA related activities.

Meeting topics and other communications are done through our  Facebook Page .
What conditions should I expect locally (temp, visibility, exposure protection)?
This varies vastly from season to season here in Maryland. During the summer, you can dive with as thing as a 1MM suit but the visibility is usually Chocolate milk. On the flip side, during the winter, you will likely need a drysuit but the visibility can reach up to 10ft sometimes.

Irregardless of the season, diving here can be challenging and presents a unique opportunity to refine your skills and become a better diver.
mp, visibility, exposure protection)? What’s the best time of year to dive locally?
We generally enjoy diving in the "transitional" seasons. This is when the water temps seem to be the most bearable and the visibility is decent. March thru July and September thru November seem to be the best bet.
What exposure protection do you recommend for local diving (wetsuit vs drysuit)?
This varies from person to person, but in general, most local divers prefer a drysuit.
Do you rent drysuits—and do you require a drysuit certification?
Yes! We rent drysuits on a daily or weekly basis. You must have a drysuit certification to rent a drysuit from us.
Do you have a local dive club?
Southern Maryland Divers, LLC is proud to fully support the Southern Maryland Dive Club. While not tethered to the business, the dive club has the full support of the shop.

Gear Purchases & Fitting

Can I buy scuba gear in-store and get fitted?
Yes! We maintain stock in items we'll sell. One of our expert team members will make sure you're fitted properly before your purchase.
Do you help new divers choose the right scuba gear?
Yes! One of the differences between us and most other dive shops or shopping online is that every single team member working the retail floor is at a minimum divemaster certified.

The knowledge and experience this brings to your interaction with us is priceless. We won't pressure you into gear that you won't need. We will ask what your goal is and then show you options best suited to meet your goal.
Do you fit masks, fins, boots, exposure protection properly (and how)?
Yes! This is our bread and butter. Because we don't include those personal items with classes, our team members have years of fitting experience when it comes to masks, fins, boots, and other personal items. The process is easy but does take roughly 30 minutes.
Should I buy gear before I’m certified?
We get asked this a lot.

We generally steer people away from purchasing a full set of gear before getting certified. There are many reasons, but the top few -
  • You may not like scuba - While this doesn't happen often at all, if it does and you just spent a lot of money on gear, it's gonna hurt. Scuba gear is like vehicles. The second it leaves the shop, the value decreases by half.
  • We want you to experience different types of gear first - Gear isn't "one size fits all". Some people like vest BCD's over Wing and Harness. Some people like full face mask regulators vs standard. Get some dives under your belt before you commit.
When it comes time to purchase, come see us, we won't steer you wrong.
What gear should I buy first (mask/fins/computer/etc.)?
Mask, snorkel, fins, and fin boots are a mandatory requirement before starting class. If you're looking to purchase your next item, we often suggest a computer. This is because it's a personal dive log that will track with you no matter what gear you have. Learning how to use it during training is a great way to be familiar with it before you start your adventure in real open water diving.
Do you carry gear for cold water and technical configurations?
Yes, and we can certainly get you fitted for the best gear designed for your goals. Let one of our expert team members guide you through the process.
Do you sell used scuba gear?
As a general rule, no. There are several exceptions to this to include tanks. While we would love to offer this service, we just don't have the storage space to stock and maintain consignment or used equipment.
Can you help configure a regulator set (hose routing, SPGs, stage/deco regs)?
Yes. If you purchase your equipment through us, we will set this up for you at no extra charge. If you bring us gear unassembled, there will be a bench work fee associated with assembly and bench testing. Either way, advice on hose routing for your configuration is no charge.
Do you sell and service dive computers—and help set them up?
Yes! We stock several brands of dive computers to include Mares , Aqua Lung , and Shearwater . We will help you setup your new computer and answer any questions you may have.
Can you help with weighting and trim?
Yes, although this is often best accomplished in the water. We can offer verbal advice in the shop but your best course of action would be to sign up for the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy specialty course where your instructor can really help you fine tune and perfect your trim.

Rentals: Gear + Tanks + Technical/CCR

What scuba gear can I rent (full package vs individual items)?
We rent individual items and complete setups. All the details can be found on our rental page HERE
What are your daily and weekly rental rates?
Prices vary depending on what you're renting. All the details are available on our website HERE.
Do I need to reserve rentals in advance?
Generally, no. If you're worried about us not having an item you need to rent, we can certainly reserve it ahead of time for you but it is very rare that we run into inventory problems with rentals.
What certification level do I need to rent certain gear (drysuit / tech / CCR)?
You will need to provide proof of certification in training for the item you are renting. For example, to rent a drysuit, you will need to have a drysuit certification. We have a ZERO tolerance policy on this.
Do you rent BP/W (backplate & wing) setups?
Yes, we have these in stock.
Do you rent sidemount gear?
Yes, we have the Dive Rite system in stock.
Do you rent pony bottles or redundant air systems?
Yes, we have both "pony" bottle setups as well as stage / bailout tanks available.
Do you rent deco bottles and oxygen-clean regs?
Yes, we have both decompression cylinders with fills along with appropriate regulators to go along with them. Proof of certification of the level diving will be required.
Do you rent CCR units—and what’s included vs extra?
Yes, we rent the Dive Rite O2Ptima BMCL and CMCL. Rental includes the unit, one scrubber cartridge, one tank of O2 and one tank of 21% diluent. All other consumables are extra.
What’s required at pickup (ID, cert card, deposit/hold)?
We will need at the very minimum your drivers license and a credit card for a charge hold for all gear rentals.
What happens if I return a tank under 500 PSI?
On top of your spanking (just kidding), you will be charged a visual inspection fee for the low pressure tank.
What happens if water is found in a returned tank?
You will be charged all associated fees to get the tank back into serviceable condition. This may include cleaning, valve rebuild, and VIP fees.
What’s your late return policy?
All late returns will be charged for and additional day and each day after.

Air, Nitrox, Trimix, Oxygen: Fills & Gas Quality

Do you offer air fills?
Yes. We offer hyper pure (oxygen compatible) air fills for tanks up to 4500 psi working pressure.
Do you offer Nitrox fills (banked 32% and custom blends)?
Yes, we bank 32% and can custom blend anything you want. There will be an additional fee for custom blends outside of 32%
Do you offer Trimix and oxygen fills?
Yes, we are full service tech dive center with a gas booster and banked Oxygen and Helium.
What’s your typical fill turnaround time?
Turn around time on custom bladed nitrox is a few days. Custom Trimix is a week.
Can I get fills while I wait?
Yes! We can fill air and 32% while you wait. Keep in mind that we fill slowly so that you have a good fill when the tank cools down.
What grade air do you provide and how do you verify quality?
We ONLY pump Grade E "Hyper Pure" air. We utilize aggressive proactive preventative maintenance, frequency filter checks and replacement, and quarterly air sample testing to verify. More info can be found HERE
How often do you test your air?
Quarterly air samples are sent to Trace Analytics for verification.
What purity oxygen/helium do you use?
We use Aviators Breathing Oxygen and UHP grade helium.
Can I review your latest air test results?
Absolutely, we keep them posted in the shop and on the wall next to the compressor. We also make a blog post entry with the results each time HERE . We are proud of our results!
Do you analyze fills and verify MOD with customers?
Yes, that is part of good practice. We don't let you leave with a blend without verifying, labeling, and logging it with us.
What’s required for fills over 40% Oâ‚‚ (oxygen service rules)?
A standard nitrox certification covers fills up to 40%. Anything over 40% will require the diver provide proof of Advanced Nitrox or above certifications.
Will you accept another shop’s oxygen-clean sticker/certification?
The short answer is yes but there are caveats. Because of the dangers involved with enriched oxygen filling, if we have any reason to be suspicious of the clean status of a tank, we may require our own certification.
Can you fill tanks in my vehicle?
In certain cases we will fill air or 32% tanks in the vehicle. Custom blends will be filled in our fill shed.
Do you fill steel tanks? High-pressure tanks?
Yes, we will fill any DOT certified and current cylinder with the approved pressure for that cylinder up to 4500 psi.
Do you fill customer-supplied stage/deco bottles?
Yes, providing it meets DOT requirements, current on visual inspection and meets our fill operators cursory visual inspection.

Cylinder Care: VIP, Hydro, Oâ‚‚ Cleaning

How often does my scuba tank need a visual inspection (VIP)?
Scuba cylinder visual inspections are an industry standard to ensure the safety of fill station operators. A valid visual inspection sticker showing a date within one year is required. Even with a valid sticker, if the fill station operator has concerns based on a cursory visual inspection, the tank may be rejected at the operators discretion until a full inspection is performed.

We provide visual inspection of cylinders with certification for gasses up to 100% Oxygen.
How often does my tank need a hydrostatic test?
The department of transportation requires scuba cylinders to be hydrostatically tested every 5 years.

We provide cylinder hydrostatic testing for cylinders.
Do you coordinate hydro testing or do it in-house?
We do not hydrostatically test tanks in house. Turn around time is roughly 10 business days from time of drop-off.
Do you offer oxygen cleaning for cylinders and valves?
Yes, we provide this service. Details along with cost can be found HERE
What’s the difference between “oxygen clean” and “oxygen compatible”?
If you really want to get into the weeds with this, there is no such thing as oxygen compatible. It's either O2 clean or it's not. This is a widely debated topic that is outside of this FAQ.
What happens if my tank is out of VIP/hydro—can it still be filled?
No, we will not fill your tank until it is up to date with all requirements and standards. We can however provide those services and fill your tank when they are completed.
Do you inspect valves and replace o-rings?
Yes. Valves are inspected and O-rings replaced with every visual inspection, hydrostatic test, and as needed.
What should I do if I get water in my tank?
Stop using it immediately and get it to us for service. The longer the moisture remains inside the tank, the harder it is to get it cleaned and back in service.
How should I store my scuba cylinders long-term?
As a general rule, tanks should be stored laying down with a "maintenance" charge of pressure. We suggest 1/3rd the working pressure of the tank as a maintenance.
Can you service paintball tanks and scuba tanks?
Yes, we service and fill scuba and paintball tanks.

Equipment Service & Repairs

What equipment do you service (regulators, BCDs, computers, drysuits)?
We do it all! If you're not sure, bring it in and we will let you know.
Which brands are you authorized to service?
We either have staff certified or techs on standby. Either way, we will get your gear serviced by someone certified to work on it.
How often should regulators be serviced?
This does vary from manufacturer to manufacturer but the general consensus is a full rebuild every 100 dives or two years (whichever comes first) and an inspection on the year between.
What’s your typical turnaround time for service?
15 business days from time of drop-off however we often return it quicker.
Do you do same-day service for urgent issues?
It depends on the issue and what is needed to fix it. If we can't, we have a full line of rentals to get you in the water.
Can you inspect gear before a trip?
We absolutely can but if the gear is due for a rebuild we aren't going to put our stamp of approval on it without a rebuild being completed.
Do you offer battery changes and pressure tests for computers?
We do offer battery changes but do not have a pressure chamber to test.
Do you do pre-owned gear inspections before purchase?
No. Used equipment with unknown history is a recipe for potentially fatal disasters. We don't put our stamp of approval on anything that either hasn't been rebuilt by us or we are familiar with the history.
Can you help troubleshoot freeflows/leaks/inflator issues?
Yes, we can help track down and resolve these issues.

Trips, Travel, and Charters

Do you offer local shore and charter dive trips?
No, the local waters aren't conducive for tourist or sightseeing type diving. We can coordinate "local" trips with some driving involved.
Do you offer international group travel?
Yes! If there's one thing we've become good at, it's this. We are known for our international and exotic group travel. Take a look HERE
How do I sign up for a trip?
You can sign up on our website under the trip page, call us, email us, stop into the shop, send smoke signals, morse code, or even a message in a bottle!

In all seriousness, we try to make it as simple as we can for you to get on the roster for one of our trips.

Head over to our Travel Page to see more.
What’s included in a group trip (lodging, diving, transfers, staff)?
This varies by trip but we generally aim to offer the most all inclusive experience that we can. Our goal is for you to just show up and make memories. We handle all the logistics and stress.
Do trips require a deposit—and is it refundable?
Yes, each trip has its own parameters set on deposits and refunds based on when we have to provide those funds to the resort. You can view the specifics for each trip on that particular trip page.
Can I transfer my spot to another diver?
In most cases this is not a problem. The only time it may involved more work is an airline ticket once issued which may result in a fee.
What happens if weather cancels a local charter?
All weather related cancelations receive a full refund minus any credit card fees assessed.
What training level do I need for each trip?
This varies from trip to trip but unless otherwise noted, Open water is fine. All of our trips have non-diver options as well for spouses who may not dive.
Can you help me choose the right trip for my experience level?
Absolutely! Contact us , or stop in and we can discuss this with you.
Do you offer pre-trip gear checks and packing help?
We can offer verbal suggestions for packing but we will not help you pack your bags. Pre-trip gear inspections are offered but beware, if your gear is due for service, we aren't going to put our stamp of approval on it without it being serviced first.
Do you help with travel gear rentals?
Yes. You will always have the option to rent gear from us at a reduced rate or we can coordinate gear rental at the destination. Our goal is to make your trip as stress free and relaxing as possible.

Safety, Readiness, and “Reality Checks”

How physically demanding is scuba diving?
Generally it's not very demanding however there is potential. That is why we require a medical waiver before each class and excursion.
What health conditions might require physician approval?
There are many reasons but some of the more common ones we see include breathing problems (asthma, COPD, etc), heart problems, and history of stroke. The best way to figure it out is to take THIS FORM to your doctor. The should be able to answer any questions you may have.
What if I’m anxious about breathing underwater?
That's exactly why we are here. Let us work you through those initially anxieties. The result will be worth it, we promise.
What if I have ear equalization issues?
Often times, we can work with you to adjust the technique you are using to equalize resulting in successful equalization. If we get up against a hard road block, we may recommend you see an ENT before moving on.
How do I avoid seasickness on boats?
This is individually specific. Some people do fine with over the counter Dramamine, and others require a prescription solution. Either way, we can work with you to find a good solution.
Do you recommend dive insurance?
Absolutely, in BOLD, YES!

While diving isn't inherently dangerous, we aren't made to breathe underwater. Even when everything is done right, accidents happen. We recommend Divers Alert Network DAN insurance. Not only is it affordable but we've seen it in action and they are stellar with their coverage.
What’s DAN and should I join?
Divers Alert Network —usually just DAN —is the scuba world’s emergency brain, insurance safety net, and research engine rolled into one.

At the sharp end: DAN runs a 24/7 diving emergency hotline staffed by physicians and dive medicine specialists. If a diver gets bent, embolized, or otherwise broken by physics and physiology, DAN coordinates care, evacuation, and recompression chamber access anywhere on the planet. They speak “dive accident” fluently, which most ERs do not.

On the practical side: DAN provides dive accident insurance . Standard health insurance often stares blankly at hyperbaric chambers, air evacuation from boats, or foreign medical systems. DAN fills that gap, covering treatment for decompression sickness, arterial gas embolism, and related injuries. It’s cheap compared to the cost of a single chamber ride, which can run into five figures fast.

On the long game: DAN conducts diving safety research —decompression models, gas physiology, equipment safety, and epidemiology. Much of what we now treat as common-sense dive practice came from their data, not folklore.

They also do education and prevention : safety guidelines, first aid training (including oxygen administration), medical screening resources, and incident reporting. The goal is fewer phone calls to the emergency line in the first place.

In blunt terms:
DAN exists because water plus pressure plus humans is a fragile equation. They’re the reason a bad dive doesn’t automatically become a life-altering disaster.

For any active diver—recreational, technical, CCR, instructor, or shop owner—DAN membership isn’t optional wisdom. It’s baseline competence.
