Should You Drink Electrolytes Before or After a Dive?
If you're adding electrolytes to your dive routine, one question comes up all the time:
"Should I drink them before I dive or after?"
The answer is... both can make sense, depending on your dive day.
Before Your Dive
The goal isn't to chug a drink right before splashing in.
Good hydration starts well before you arrive at the dive site. By the time you feel thirsty, you're often already behind.
For morning dives:
- Hydrate the evening before.
- Drink fluids with breakfast.
- Consider adding an electrolyte drink before heading to the boat, especially on hot days or when making multiple dives.
Between Dives
Surface intervals are a great opportunity to replace fluids you've already lost.
A bottle of water and an electrolyte drink can be an easy way to stay ahead of dehydration during a full day on the water.
After Diving
Your hydration needs don't stop when you climb the ladder.
Continuing to replace fluids after your last dive supports recovery after a long day in the sun, carrying gear, and breathing dry compressed air.
Don't Overdo It
More isn't always better.
Drinking excessive amounts of plain water in a short period can dilute your body's sodium levels. The goal is steady hydration throughout the day, not trying to "catch up" all at once.
A Simple Dive-Day Routine
Here's an easy strategy:
✔ Night Before
Drink water consistently throughout the evening.
✔ Morning
Hydrate with breakfast.
✔ Between Dives
Continue drinking fluids and eat a light snack.
✔ After Diving
Keep hydrating during the drive home and throughout the evening.
Hydration isn't complicated—it just needs to be consistent.
